Opening in Spring of 2025 at Dock Space Gallery in San Antonio, Texas, When Here Was There, was a culmination of notions around home and how these ideas shift with time and where we find meaning in that. Derived from the Gertrude Stein quote from Everybody’s Autobiography, when reflecting on the lost nostalgia of her childhood home decades later, “there’s no there there”.

“Home” can be a place, a shelter, a dwelling. It can just as easily be a person or a thing, a feeling of safety, of care. The arms of a loved one, friends, a pet, or even food or a smell. Homes can be lost, found, built, sold, destroyed, changed, real or imagined. Homes can be welcoming or not.

Exploring popular ideas of home as a symbol of comfort, belonging, family, community, and permanency as well as the idea that one’s home is a thing we carry more than a physical space. When Here Was There is a sorting of nostalgia, of memories, of ideals, legacy and daydreams.
